Food Environments for Planetary Health (Food-PlanetH)

Most people care deeply about their health and the health of their families, and try to eat healthily and sustainably. To support individuals in putting these good intentions into action, health-promoting food environments are crucial – that is, food environments which make healthy and sustainable foods available, accessible, attractive, and affordable for all, in settings such as supermarkets, restaurants, and school and workplace canteens.

Food-PlanetH combines expertise from public health, nutrition, health economics, law, and marketing and consumer research to examine public policies on food environments. We focus on four policy areas in particular: school nutrition, food marketing, food taxation, and food labelling. We conduct evidence syntheses and primary research, develop recommendations through policy analysis, and build networks, capacities and methods for interdisciplinary food environment research in Germany and beyond. In the project, we take a planetary health approach, considering both synergies and trade-offs between human health and environmental sustainability.
